Bouth China Morning Post,
Schooling In the East. An interesting correspondenes on Education in Shanghai bas boon appearing in s Northern con- temporary and to it Mr. Herbert L. Beer, of Weihaiwei School, has contributed a lengthy and inform ing letter. Mr. Bear is entitled to spesk with some authority regard- ing education in the Far East, and when he says that "in the field of preparatory eduoation, at any rate, so far as mere book know- ledge goes, Boboole in the Last compare favourably with schools in other parts of the world," bia opinion carries weight and gives some assurance. But be bastona to add that "education ” means a deal more than book-knowledge. This point has been made more than ones in our colofans, but it may be referred to again. No one. denies the value of book- knowledge, but more than that goes to the making of a man. And while examinations, test ́n youth's cleverness they do not, and cannot, teat his fitnesa to occupy a position of responsibility where more than mere cleverness is required.

Entertainment Fund for the
Territorials.
It is, however, falt that the arrival of the Territorisis calle for some special manifestation of the community's appreciation of the sacrifices these men have made in throwing up their oivil employ- ment to volunteer, for military service wherever they may be needed, so the least that we can do is to make some effort in the manner indicated above to relieve the monotony of their sojɔara in Hongkong. The first thing neces mary, of course, is the appointment of an energetic committee to lake charge of the arrangements and to receive subscriptions and dona- tions. We imagine that a fund of not less than $500 a month will be necessary during the con- tinuance of the stay of the Force in Hongkong, and we have very little doubt that such a small fund could be maintained without in the least adversely affecting the other Funda iu connection with the war to which the community ja already contributing. Pending the formation of a Committee we will gladly acknowledge any con- tributions forwarded to this office for such a purpose.

aggeration for it must be re- membered that the higher prices. for the different goods do not by any meane signify a direct ad ditional profit for the works, but only serve to establish a better proportion between cost of pro- duction and selling price, and the former has in many cases risen far more than the latter. A con- dition of fall employment at good prices only prevail at those works. which in times of peace devoted themselves to the manufacture of military requirements; most other works are content if they, during the war, in addition to costs and writings off, can earn a modest surplus. As regards raw materi als, the coal market was busiest, the production at the coal-mines of the Rbur district having risen doring February, as compared with the previous month.
Since then we learn that the German markets have been much more seriously dislocated and in many instances are completely af a standstill.
