LOG BOOK.

Wrecklog the American Merchant Marine,

No doubt the President, who pashed the ship-purchase bill so vigorously, was consistent in signing the stamen's bill observanN the Philadelphia Publio Ledger. Either measure was an almost infallible way of wreoking what remains of the American merchant- marine. The first fortunately failed to become law, but the second will now go into operation. Mr. Wilson suggests that the diplomatic difficulties it raises may be adjusted," but be doss not indicate how. A repudiation of treaty obligations is not easily defended, nor la interferenos between a foreign shipmaster and his oraw in American ports the sort of thing that promotes inter- national amity. On its economic side the bill is proposterous, It provides regalations in the name of asfaty which other maritime nations whose ahipa oirole the globe have not found desirable, and it raises the expenses of running Ameri- can ships in the foreign trade, already too great, to an almost prohibitive point. Instead of giving the American shipowner à better chance, it taken away from. him what little chance he has. Ho must now employ useless seamen and abandon all hops of profit in order to comply with the demands of the unions.

Launch of Chinese Gunboat.

The Kiangnan Dook and En- gineering Works launched at their yard last week the first of two gunboats they have under construction for the Imperial Chinese Government. The launch was in every way satisfactory, the vessel taking the water without a bitch says the N. China Daily. News. The christening ceremony was performed by Admiral Los Ping-sing, the uniforms of the Admiral and his staff lending quits a colour to the proceedings. The platform was decorated with fags, and the band from the Hai Ohi was in attendance. The gunboat is of shout 1,000 tons displacement and to have a plement of 100 men. .⠀ The Dissel Engine and Crude Olf A recent issue of the Journal of Commerce contains an interest- ing article on the subject of oil fuel, which, judging from internal evidence, comes from the pen of Mr. Kermode, of Liverpool. the Diesel engine, nor can petro leum residuum, yet thèse are what are olagzed as fuel oil for steam raising in boilers or for ure in industrial process furnaces of every kind, Diesel oil is, however, also a fuel oil. In addition to the petroleum oils, too, there are various other ails or by-products which can be successfully utilised as fuel. Tars of various kinda, including cosi tar, wator gan tar, oreosote, blast furnace oil, alcohol, molesies, castor oil, rapeseed and cottonseed oil and coconut oil can be employed. Most of these are admitted to be too valuable to be used an fuel in this country, but where they are produced, the oust of transport of ordinary liquid and solid fools and other drawbacks, coupled with their higher prices, make their employment quite Fossible. The Syren and Ship Ping Illustrated,
