Shipplug Under Difficulties, Manufacturers, merohanta, and shipowners have been transacting business under difficult conditions for months past owing to the severe congestion at the docks, and now the prospect of batter Wall me abous times has been ruined by the |blight of the tevedores" strike ...21st April

says the London and China Ex- ...ist half May press of March 19. Every firm 1st half May of merchants knows that business

is being very far from "as usual.” A merchant neither knows when he can get inwards goode delivered or outward cargo shipped. The goods and the money they repre seat are lying idle. A case was quoted to as the other day of an Eastera liner that desired to work overtime Saturday afternoon, necessitated by the slack working of the week. The'men refused, und it was necessary to take on a Sunday gang at a cost of 30s. per man. Some 80 men were re- quired, and it cost the ship £120. Unfortunately, the only result of suoh high wages, was that the men would not turn up probably for several days.

"The steamers are all fitted throughout with electric light and have accommodation for a limited number of saloon-passengers. All Steamers carry a duly qualified surgeon. Cargo taken at through rates to all ports in Netherlands-India and Australia
