Manahaster Weekly Market Report.
Mesare. James F. Hutton & Co.,. Ltd., Manchester, writes March 11/16.-We have again to report an upward tendency of prices which yesterday reached the highest point since the outbre: k of the war, both at Liverpool and New York. At Liverpool curreat month touched 5.04 although Spot Mid American, fixed earlier in the day, was only quoted 5.07, and quotations there, will no doubt be advanced again today. At New York, Spot was fixed at 8.85 cents as against the previous highest point of 8.70. To find reasons for this rather unexpected strength is difficult, except it be that in a preliminary report by the Journal of Commerce with regard th
the acreago which claima that the acreage to be given to coton in Texas this year in 25 per cent below last years, and in Dalabama 30 per

F'kong Fire Ins Co., Ld. two States prow oughly a third of the total crop. A small crenge will certainly send prices up but other reports seem to how intthe acredge will not be to email as to have any violent effect on valdes. Taking the general situation into account, weconsider the steadineen of valdes is remarkable and one can only put this down to le fact that speculation is for the time being at
discount Values do not get far. from Giveperca and it is not to be expected that they will do so for the present. The cloth businerx' doing is much spaller thin it hus been for some weeks, and we scem'to to between perioda at the moment. What is done however. al one makers appreciably firmer and harder to deal with, while the finishing end of the trade, such as Bletchers and Dyere ar in many instances running full time again. In face of the heavi ly reduced exports of Feb. ry it is surprising whore the cloth bas gone to, and it has been sugges1 – ed that makers canut have been an vill laced se circumstan.CEE indicated.
"The preilion changes very little Bo far as the quotable value of Colton is concerned.
At the moment of writing we are on the}' upward grade, dud at New York. prices are almost as high as they have been since the War com menced. For this several explana tions are put forward. There has been increased buying of Colton at interior poin 8 by American Spionere, continued liberal export, firmness of Spot Marke's in the South, good boy- ing for New Orleana account, auc better advices from Liverpool, which merket "has no doubt been relieved by the practical failure of the so-called German blockede. It was expected that the retaliatory measures propterd by the British Government woold bave cased prices but other in- fluences get to have proved stronger. At Liverpool, Spot: prices are not yet very far from fivepence although the volume of business develops very slowlytja The stubborn resistance of values to any further decline-in face of the political developments and a falling off in trade demand in- olizes one to think that presen prices must be regarded an real- onable,
There is plenty of cotton at Liverpool now and Spinners generally speak well of the spianable quality of this seasons crop which sho naually! improves as the season gets further on. The business doing in cloth has fallen off very considerably this last week, but makers are in fair posi- tion and can afford to wait a little. Calcutta is quiet both for 8birt- inga and Dhooties ne are most of the India markets for staple goods, but for Fancies more has been done. The little business report. Aed from Singapore dces zot increase and for the most part, offers are inadequate from all markets, China is reported as having done a moderate businesE in the beavier types of Shirtinge, but otherwise practically nothing. From the advance figures of February exports of Cotton Piece Goods published to day it would that there has been again a great falling off which is of course sadisfactory to overstocked mar "kets, Bombay again being special- ly small, Exports will however commence inoressing: very Boon a8 some good business has been done for forward thipment,
