The Government talt monopoly in Netherlands India bas now been converted into a distinct department entitled the "Zoutre- gie" department, the fanctions of which comprise (a) the pic duction and purchase of crude Balt, (b) the commercial treatment and packing of the crude product, (c) transport and storage of the orade and prepared product to and at the places of sale, (d) and the selling of the salt.

Bean Oil from Feagtien. In response to the inquiries of the Revenue Department, be authorities of Fengtien bave sub- mitted a report on the bean oil trade in Fengtien. According to the report, the output for export of Yingkow alone amor.nts to more than 100,000 piculs each year, mainly for ecusumption in Koesia. In recent years, however, owing to the increased freight rates for transportation and the levy of a new tax, the trade has mande no progress. The report, therefore, suggests that steps should be taken to assist the merchants by either reducing the freight rates or abolishing some of the miner taxes imposed on the bean and ita by-producte. The proposal has been favourably received by the Department, and delegates have been dispatched to which direction the Basialanoa may be given
