Dutch Indies Loan,

The Netherlands Indias 5 per asnt. loan bas been successfully floated, well over the amount of 624 million guildere required fat- ing been subscribed in the East.. slone, while subscriptions to the loan in Holland total some U8. millions. Allotment will take! place on the 24th inst.

The War and Indigo. The war ban had a very marked effect on the production of indijo in Netberlande India. The es ports of dry ind go increased from 34 646 kg in 1913 to 114,011 kg. in 1914, an increase of over 300 per cent. In 1912 and 1913 no indigo, was exported to Eng- land, but the 1914 export amount- ed to 16,202 kg. The bittik in dustry in Java is being very adversely affected by the shortage of German aniline dyes, all atoi ki | of which have been bought up by export fi:ma in anticipation of increased prices from abroad, and the export demand for the native grown indigo is so keen that prices have already reached a level which the local battik workers can barely afford to pay.

Singapore's Trade.

Tuo late to deal with in any detail, the cfficial retorne of the imports and exports of the Straite Settlements for the fourth quarter. of 1914 reach us this morning says the Straits Times of March 24. The total of imports during this period was $90,92,137, which is less by $28,611,117 than the amount recorded for the last quarter of 1913; while the total of exports was $85,702,222, a drop of $0,585,085 on the cor responding quarter of 1913. In importe, the decreasea are on sc count of Singapore $12,179 736 and of Penang $10,553,664,' Maleres showing a slight increase In exports cingapore and Malacca show increases of $678,207 and $1,656,190 respectively, while Pepeng shows the largo decrease! of $8,920,162 for the fon th quarter. The gross diorence in volume of trade, in stailing, for, the fourth quarter, an against the similar period of 1913, ia in' imports £3,326,207 and in exporta £788,327.

The Cotton Trade. The latest Girners' Report of the United States Corporation bas been issued, and the final estimate is 15,875,000 bales, exclusive of lintera. This is below expeola- tions and consequently the market in New York ie no longer bearish. Prices have been moving up, and. the latest New York quotation is 10.21 cents, October. In Liver- pool also prices have been advan- cing, the latest quotation being 5.25d. spot; owing to the high freight and insurance and other risks on account of the war, the market in Liverpool remains strong. There is practically": nothing doing in the yarn irade, as the Chinese are unwilling to do more business than they can help. Especially Japanese yara. has dropped heavily, and even on the very low rates could not find buyers. In sympathy with, this: drop cotton and local para prices have come down. Consequently. there is no business. There has been no improvement in the piecegoods market; to a certain extent the position has been made. worse by the fluctuation in the exchange. At the auctions about the same quantities were put up,| and prices were not satisfactory." At the Yuen Fong, greye were slightly lower, whites steady, blacke alightly lower, reds steady "and woollens and lastings lower.

A propceal to increase the price of cement has been occupying the minds of cement manufacturers, anya the "Japan Chronicle." The Nippon Cement and Saga Cement companies, who are regarded as the feaders in this proposal, have: been urging the union of coment manufacturers to enfores the in crease in spite of the opposition of one or two companies. As a resalt of the operations of the two com- panies mentioned, the Tokio association of cement companies hes come into line, and the union has succeeded in obtaining a
