The Dreadnought, which dates from 1908, was the first battleship to be fitted with steam turbines. Previously, except in the case of small craft, all ships of war had had reciprocating engines. But the success of the engines of the vessel that inaugurated a new naval era was such as to lead to s general adoption of Sir Charles Parsons' invention in the place of that which had done such aplendid service for upwards of a century. Of recent years an im- mense amount of work has been accomplished in improving the efficiency of the marine steam turbine, but there still remains much to be done, as was pointed out recently by Mr. G. Gerald Stoney, F.R.S., at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers The East was emphasised that, in order to attain maximum economy in the turbine-engined ship, the en- tire exhaust from the auxiliary engines should be condensed by the feed-water. The quantity of heat that can be absorbed de- pends, of course, on the tempera-... tare of the condensate delivered from the condenser 'and 'on the

point of view would be one in which the turbine works under the highest attainable vacudi with efficiency, and in which the exhaust steam je maintained at.. sach pressure as will enable its heat to be wholly transferred to the feed-water. In fact, the economic pressure for the anti- liarios to exhaust at is that in which the whole of their exhaust can be condensed by the feed. Obviously there should be no surplus exhaust, and if there is a surplus it should never be die- charged into the main -con- denser, because of the highly

transferring efficiency of the con.. denser tubes and on the vacuum. The direction in which progress is to be made on marine tur bine installations would, therefore, appear to be; (8) high vacuum turbines, (b) high efficiency con densing plant, (c) economical auxiliaries, (d) efficient exhau-t- steam feed-bestera. In some casSS where there is a surplus of anxi Leave Hongkong liary steam it is turned into the for Australia, low-pressure turbine, and here there is an apparent partial re- 20th Apr. at 11a.m.covery of the loss, but in practico 13th May

If, however, the steam is used in this way, it should be very care fally filtered. Mr. Stoney gave some very interesting figures re- lative to the weights of warship machinery and to desirable con- ditions in the condensers. Thus, in the case of a battleship
