The Peking Ministry of Finar ce has submitted the following docu ment to the President regarding the salt tax in Shantung: "Balt Commissioner Wang Hong-lu of Shantung reported that from Jar- asry of this year, the inx on alt was increased by 50 cents silver per poul. The Salt Guild and several salt companies petitioned that they be allowed to sell alti at the silver rate so that they might be enabled to meet the increase in tax without too much lcna. Record Cotton Crop Indicated

in. U.9. Report, Washington, Jan. 23.—A record cotton crop for the 1914-15 seasoni was indicated in the CentUA Borean's report to-day, showing 14,907,042 ruauing bales had been ginned prior to January 18. Ginnings from January 1 to 15 amoanted to 460,149 bales and exceeded those of that period in any previous year. They also took the total ginnings beyond any previous year, exceeding the record production year of 1911 by almost 400,000 ba1əs. Until the Census Bureau's final ginning re- port is issued on March 20 the exact size of the 1914 cotton crop will not be known, but it is be- lieved it will be larger than the 1911 record, which was 15,553,073 running bales. It depends upon the quantity ginned from January 16 to the end of the season, which in 1911 amounted to 1,037,274 biles, and for the last five years has averaged 185,590 bales. Blorld as much beginned as in 1911, this year'e crop would be close to 16,000,000 bālos.
