tainly be a great saving of time. for passengers. From now on until the end of April cargo junks will make the tripin about twenty days, with a fair amount of safety. Word has just reached hers that Capt. Plant has been appointed | inspector of the river between here and Ichang by the Inspector- General of Customs. This is a work which is badly needed on this dangerous river. We are sure no better man could have been chosen for the position, and 'böth the Inspector General and the Commissioner, Mr. Guernier, sre to be congratulated" on the appointment.

A pleasant little function took place in the Guild Rcom yester- day afternoon, saya the Singapore Free Press of March 3, when about a dozen members of the Committee and Guild gathered as representatives of the other mem bera, 10 make a presentation to, Mr. Walter Makepeace; their honorary Treasurer, who is leav- ing for home to-morrow. In calling on Capt. L. Darke, the vice-president, to raake the pre- sentation, Capt. Mons referred to the hard work of their Treasurer in helping to establish the Guila. and in guarding its financOS. They would miss Mr. Makepeace and hoped he would here i pleasant holiday. Capt. Darke presented Mr. Makepeace, on behalf of the members, with a Bassion leather pocket book, lined with a draft for a substantial amount. He, the speaker, had been associated with Mr. Makepeace from the very in ception of the Guild, was its firat honorary secretary,
and none knew better than himself the work their honorary, treasurer had done in establishing the Gui'd. Sea-faring men ware per- bapa sparing of their words cu an ocasion, but their saph wishes for a pleasant holiday and wafe return were entirely hearty. Mr. Makepeace, in acknowledg ing the handsome gift they had made him, thanked them beartily. He felt proud to have been asso- oisted with the sea-fering com- munity, who were most interest- ing, if only from the vigoar of their grousing." (Laughter); He was proud to have met them as friends and pleased to have done what he could to help their Guild. As to their handsome present, he had a notion that the "first mats contemplated an addition to the family plate, with it, and there would thus be a lasting remem. brance of their kindness,
