The Laertes and The Submarlac,

The British steamship, Laertes has arrived at Amsterdam, hav ing been attacked in the North 898 by a German submarine, U 2. Captain Propert states that the Laertes sailed without a flag. Tus Liertes left Java some weeks ago with a general Eastern cargo, which was partly unloaded at Liverpool From Liverpool she sailed for Ymuiden and Ameter- dam. On 10th inst., between 4 and 5 p.m., when steaming bes the Suhouwen Bank, a submarine tween the Maas Lightship and signalled to the Laertes from be hind and ordered her to stop. Evening was approaching when the Laertes was summoned., Cap. tain Propert, who, of course, wa fully aware of the German Da claration and the riske incurred in the passage, paid no head to h signal, He was flying no fig at the time, but, puiting on full steam, he hofeted the Dutch fig, pursued by the submarine, Meanwhile the ship's fires were stoked violently, and soon the Laertes was steaming, it is stated, between 15 and 16 kaots, that is to say, some knots mo.e than her. normal top speed, for those who know her would

The chase continued, and the aubmarine zeems to have ap proached, as near as 500 yards to the vessel. Captain Propert out- wilted his pursuer by steering an irregular course, putting his helm alternately to starboard and port. This zigzag course.com pletely baffled the German boat, which had come, to the surface and used her quickfirer, hitting the funnels and damaging the compass. The submarine then discharged a torpedo. Captain Propert saw it approaching, its track betrayed by a long line of bubbles on the surface of the sex, and dexterously altered his course, This msumarre enabled the Laertes to avoid the missile, which passed horm leasly by her, though rather close under the stern. Then something seems to have gone wrong with the submarine's mechanism, for her chase of the Laortes slopped when she was about 500 yardı from that vessel, which proceed,
