some time, past, says the San Fran cisco. Chronicle, the heade of the Japanese company have been making a close study of now equipment, including the electric- al drive, now being adopted on a number of war vessels. Whils turbine engines are at their beat in the open sea, a vessel fitted with them is harder to berth than a craft with recipro- cating engines, and at times con siderable difficulty is experienced in getting a tarbiner into her
should the tide or weather be at all contrary. The advantages of the electrical drive are: Steam- ors with direct turbines muit gear down the propeller shaft from 2,200 revolutions perminats, the efficient speed of a turbine, to about 350 revolutions per minute, the efficient speed of a propeller. In reversing, steam loses practical. ly all its power in driving a tur bine. The electrical contrivance does away with all these disad vantages, it is claimed. There is une central stoam turbine, rua. ding always at full speed in one direction. This is directly con- nected to a high speed, three- phass alternating carrent generator.. The electricity from The generator is carried to motors, the full speed of which is about 350 revolutions per minute, As long as the generator runa al a certain speed they will run at the same proportionate speed, and will do just as good work, whe ther running forward or aetern, This also prevents all racing of

Mexican Oil industry. London, Jan. 22.—It was ̧BR- nounced on enquiry at the offices of S. Pearson and Sons on Mon- day that the decree of General Carranza closing the whole oil- and affected all oil companies, field had already come into force, both British and American. Ac cording to cable advices received by the firm, the reason assigned was that the foreign oil companies had a habit of applying to their own Governments for protection, and this General Carranza wished to avoid. The closing of all oil operations has at any rate entailed this result, for strong representa tions have been made by the American oil interests to the Government, at Washington; who will, it is understood, also be ap proached by the British Govern ment.
