British Firms and Their German Agents.
As would be seen from the tele- ziam Bout us yesterday by our London correspondent and "con- firmed to-day by Renier's Agency, the British Government do rot at Fresent consider it desirable to enact legislation by which British firms at Home might be prevented from trading through German firme in China. No resson is given why such a simple mattes ahould not be andertaken at pres ent, and we are therefore left to conclude that certain commercial concerna have successfully point ed out that such legislation would probably lead to considerable dislocation of their business in the Far East. If that is the reason, it is neither sufficient nor satisfactory. It is little short of scandalous that British firms should trade with any German firm or employ as their agenta any such firm in the Far East Or elsewhere during the present | critical state of affaite. For far too long a timo German firms in this part of the world have re- presented certain British con mercial concerns. Even in normal |times such a state of affairs, 18 surely as deplorable as it is un- necessary. The justification for the employment of German agents by British firma is, we have read, |that they are more profitable, which doubtless means that they work for less than British corna will accept as egente.
