In the course of hie conversR=" tian with a representative of the Vatin, Mr. Churchill, speaking of the four vossola-Karlacubo,
resilen, Kroppring Wilhelm, and Prinz Eitel Friedrich-which re still at liberty, is reported to I have said:-"We cannot
in what out-of-the-way harbours, in what rivers, somewhere in the American Continent, thoss craisers are hidden; but we do know that they find it necessary: to conceal themselves." The reports, therefore, that the Kerle rahe aad Dresden had besu accounted for are manifestly inaccurate, while if the two armed merchant ships are biding somewhere in the American Continent they cannot be a menace in the Indian Ocean. It should relieve the minda of all interested in the Estorn. trade to know that the report about the Eitel Friedrich having inted her attention to the soone of the Emden's activities is in- correct. It is to be hoped she" will not get into Eastern waters. The discovery and destruction of these cruisera is largely a matter of time, patience, and good look. The World's Shipbuilding, According to the annual summary issued by Lloyd's Re gister of Shipping, during 1914 050 vessele, of 1,083,553 tons gross, were launched in the United Kingdom. The output of mercantile tonnage shows a deorenss of 218,800 tons on that of the previous year, which was the bighost over reached. Of the total output, 75 2/5 per cent, or 1,278,530 tons, has been built for registration in the United King dom. The amount of tonnage launched for other countries dur ing 1914 was 410,023 tone, forming 244 per cent, of the total. output, as compared with over 21 per cent, in 1913, nearly 24 per cent. in 1912, 223 per cent. in 1911, 19 per cent. in 1910, 24/2-5 per cant. in 1909, 40 per in 1908, and 34 per cent. in 1907. The Clyde district occupies the first place among the shipbuilding centres of the country, showing an outpat of 444,621 tone (Glasgow 288,103 tons and Greenock 196,518 tons). Then follow the Tyne (315,585 tone), the Wear (277,528 tons), Belfast (239,819 tons), Middles-- and.
