Uplands being capable of cultiva- tion in Chyolls, a scheme was adopted in 1912 for increasing the plantation of this crop up to an area of 60,000 chn by 1017. This would have put half the land in the province under cot- ion, but it would have deprived the Borcans of the land necessary for the raising of their household vegetabira. It was therefore manifertly impracticable, and a more modest rebeme has been adopted.

The Rubter Trade.

Men Is. Sandereon and Co. note that per- mission has not been given to ship direct from the East to Americs, and as long as this pro- bibition existe we may icok for a good market in London. Our contention bat, il all the rubber, were to come to Lendon, higher prices would be obtained bas been borne out. We have now a stock of 7,338 tons, and a visible supi ly awaiting discharge of about Nevertheless cur 5,000 tons..

If this stock market advances. were divided as in former times between London, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Hamborg, and direct shipping were going on from Colombo and Singapore prices would be considerably It is largely because robeater.

the big bayers have to come to the London market for their requirements and show their band to the owners that prices have been so well maintained. contemporary points out that British Rubber manufacturéza are so basily engaged at present ia fulfilling Army contrɛcs that they are quite unable to avail themselves of the opportunity to secure new trade formerly carried out by enemy countries. They are hampered farther by the loss of many skill- ed workers who have answered the call of their country. Few in- dostrica bold out more feore for expansion at the expense of the enemy than that of rubber, bat it is doubtful bow much will be noble ved at the present rate of progress. Rubber manufacturere as a whole are a very conservative body; but at this juncture there is not only the fact that they have large Government orders to fulfil but that manufacturers in the United States are equally keen on capturing German irado,
