Philippine Hemp-Grading Law.

The U.8. Consul, George E Anderson, Hongkong, sales that in spite of the apposition of hemp bayors and shippers to the new Philippine law, designed to im prove and standardise grades of hemp and other fibres, Goverċ-| ment officials report that it is approved by hemp producers, and that its provisions are being promptly met. Inspectors provided. for in the law have been sent into the provincesof Ambos Camarines, Albay, Sorsogon, Leyte, Samar, Cebu, Northern Mindanao, the two locos Provicces, Lagana, Tayabas, Batangas, a 1 Cavite. The work has been started by a series of conferences between the fibre experts and local officials and fibre producers, at which the new law and its objects were care- fally gone over. Later the experts visited individual praducere and indicated to them the best methode of salting out, cultivating, and harvesting the plant and strip- ping the fibre. Other representa Lives of the Government are making a thorough personal canvase of the grading and b-ling satablishments. Requests baye. already been made by establish- ments and municipalities for samples of fibre-fficially graded, and many indicate their intention of conducting the work in accord-j ance with the requirements of the new system. This legislation will undoubtedly revolutionise the Manila hemp trade of the wrld, and promises to bavo a fur renobing ffect upon the market| for other fibres, by reason of the comparison the latter muet ander. go with the scientifically selected and uniform grade samples est- ablished by the Philippine Gov erament for hemp and maguey.
