Minister of the Navy the ceremony and announced. the names of the vessels —the Kashiwa and the Matsu, Mr. Shiota, General Manager of the Dockyard, released the vessels, which took the water in very quick time-about thirty seconds
in
in each instance. The Kashiwa was launched a few minutes be- fore eight o'clock and the Matsu an hour later. In accordance with Japanese naval custom doves and a showet of confalti were released from a large bill, suspended from the bows as each | vessel ontered the water. The |hopters in the Dockyard and the eyrens on vessels ia harbour. joined the acclamation which marked the successfal launching of the ships. From Tatogami the guests were taken in launches to Akaacura, where refreshments were served. The: trip afforded a close view of the battle-oruiter Kirishima, which is just being completed for sea, As soon as the guests had assembled before the well-laden tables, Vice- Admiral Fuji led three banzai for the Emperor." At a later stage of the proceedings Mr. Shiota addressed the guests, especially thanking the naval officers for their presence in view of the fact that a destroyer was to be launch ed and the new basin filled at Saseho the following day, on which account the Nagcaski ceremony had taken place a day earlier than was originally planned. Mr. Shiota' said that all the material used in the con- etruction of the Kashiwa and Maten had been manufactured in Japan. The engines and other equipment had been partly made at the Mitsu Bishi yard at Kobe, proving that the latter, which was intended for a repair. establishment, WAS "capable of дан work. Mr. Shiota. then called for banzai for the Im- perial Navy. In a very brief speech Governor Rinoiye eulogis- "ed the Mitsu Bishi Dockyard and Engine Works and then led oni thusiastic banzai. The new de afroyers, which are of medium size, were approved by the Im- perial Diet at the Extraordinary, Session held last year. Their keels were laid down on Novem- ber 3rd, so that they were only. on the stooks about fourteen weeks,"
Alexandra Docks, Bombay, The Bombay Port Trast authorities are to be congratulated on the excellent manner in which they have managed their affairs. since the outbreak of the war. They had, says the Advocate of | India, a very difficult and delicate: tank to perform during the past: few months in facilitating trans port arrangements etc., and it hardly needs to be told every-
■thing was a bitch. That memorable day, March 21st, 1914, on which His Ex- cellency the Viceroy performed. the opening ceremony of the. Alexandra Docke, will still be re- membered by all. Although the, docks were then of cially opened, still the construction was not complete in its reat sense and many finishing touches had still to be done. Bat fate decreed that it should be opened then and the ontbreak of the war à few months hence has shown us how the new docks have been valuable for military purposes. In fact, it is the biggest dook over built enst of Snez, and Bombay may justly be proud of it. The many thousands of soldiers that have left India to fight for the Empire had to pass mostly through the Alexandra Docks and the fact will be recorded in the annals of tho Bombay Port Trust,
