The Extension of British Tride In Chine.

As regards any opportunity fr the extension of British trade in Ohina it should be noted that goode of British origin Lave already an overwhelming pre- ponderance over those of German origin. Out of the"£80,000,000 worth of goods imported into China in 1013, to imports from the British Empire were valued at £50,000,000. Of theso £15, 000,000 worth came direct fr.m the United Kingdom, and £20, 000,000 worth from Hongkong, which latter was lugely composed of United Kingdom produce and manufactures. Jiyan is the obief ocmpeilior of the United Kingdom in the import trade of Ohina; her sbare in 1013 having ́zaprcnipted a valas of £18,000,- COD, whereas Germany only aup- plied goida to the value of £4- 000,000. The principal articles of which the import from Ger- mony exceede "that" from the United Kngdem are arma and ammunition, artificial indigo, paper, aniline dyes, electrical goods, hosiery, and lamps. In the last three yetro Gir many has avert ken, British manufacturers in the supply of electrical "gcode; but there is reason to believe that much of the. apparent German succes is due to unsound methods of foanting business in Obica which" will not eurvive the present uphraval, and one may confidently anticipate a gradually expanding market in Chins for British electrical sup- plies. The chief point of interest to British traders as regards the export trade of Chinn is whether. they will succeed in capturing the trade in produce, cther then silk and ten, which is now largely in the hande of German mer- chants. This question is not en tirely of local interest, as trade). relations established by inexport. er react on the import trade which may be carried on by the same mer- chant. Tae-innin reason why Bri- tieb from bave hitherto held com- paratively aleaf from the cort trade in produce from the Yangtze Valley, for instance, is because ompetition has reduced pr fits in such business to a minimum andj even this minimum is very onaily converted into a loss when claima have to be paid, a contingency for which special reckoning must be made in a country like China where the propensity of produceIS to adulteration and shirt men Lures is inveterate. There con ditions will no doubt be remedied in time; they are partly due to the Ova-engeness of German firms to secure a footing in the trade atļ whatever cost, and when the pre- Bant depression acvar the sundry export business may be resumed on a sepader ong more profitable basis. While the dipression lasts, tonerer, it is impossible for Brities merchante to profit by any enforced inactivity of their com potitors; when the trade recovera merchants of all nationalities will: have to start en fqual terme.

Cotton Spinning Profits in England.

Ia his test cotton trade air; calar Mr. Frederick W. Tattersall gives particulars of the earnings, dividends, etc.. ef ostion spinning companies in Manchester, and it must be said that the showing| for 1014 is a poor one," although not so bad as for the three years, 1909, 1910 and 1911. A sam- mary of one hundred companies reduced to one buge milk ehowa that, after charging loan and mcrt- goge interest and wear and tear of plant, the net profit for the past year on à total share capital of £3,589,000 was only £53,200, ne compared with £630,800 ig 1913, that the percentago of profit on the abarb capital im- ployed works out at £1 9. 01. per cent., as agninat £14 128, 6J. per.cent Dividends paid in 1914 averaged 63 per cent, as cm- pared with 8 per cent. in 1913, and the net credit balances in hand at the end of 1914 amounted to £458,400, or £257,600 less than

at the end of the previous year.
