Tientsia Dividends.
Many Tientsin companies, sro paying good dividend" for-the past year. The, Tientsin Water- Works Co., Ltd declared a 5% dividend at their annual meet- ing; and the directors of the Taku Tog and Lighter Co., Ltd. parpone to pay another dividend of 43 per cent, which, with the ad interim ora of 4% already paid, will make 84 for the year.
Textile Industry... Lord Hetherham, president of the Textile Institute, occupied the obair at a meeting of the Royal, Soviety of Arts recently, when] Mr. J.A. Bunter road a paper on "The Textile Industries of Great Britria and Germany," Mr. Bur- ter said that, structurally, the industry was mach the me in Germany as here. La both poun. trios subatan tially the same num- ber of persons was empleyad, This, however, did not imply that the industries wero of the same Bize. The German ceauna of production pointed to a gross output of £150,000,000, wheress Great Britain was at least twice as large. There wire in the world some 145,000,000 xpiad- lee spinning cotton. Of these 56,000,00 were in England and 11,500,000 in Germany.
Philippine Copra for British Crushers.
In the course of a recent report by the American Consul (Charles! M. Habaway) of Bull, it is sialed that the leading seed crushers and oil extracters of Bull-some of whom are almo Jargely concerned in these ic- dustries in London and Liver- pool-are apparently making y re- parations to embark in the ex- traction of pa'm-kerzel nud! coconut oil, ellough palm ker nela and copra bave not heretofore, been crushed in Hull in any quantity.
I
The extraction of palm-kernel oil seems to bave i rogressed more rapidly than that of copra, and it is said that roßmble results aro in sight. However, there appears to be no doubt that coconut oil will be extensively produced in Fall in the near future. One firm is now crushing its first large batch of copro (Singapore). Othere are making chemicni nualy. ses and working small parcela for practical tests, and machinery for the production of edible cîl is, } in Teveral cases, known to be in process of installation: It ja believed by this offico that by January, 1015, Hell will be in pakition to tako, large quantities of copra.
ال
The desirability of coaling with oopra and pula kernels inglull apfcere to have been brought to the attention of the local sood crushers' organiection__by_the British (Government) Board of Trade soon after the outbreak of the war, and the afecciation has been, as a body, Investigating both linen since. As the extrac- tion of cepra oil on a large scale would require considerable ex- teneicn of plant and the invest- ment of considérable capital, the atatus of the newly established industry after the war is being carefully considered.
There creme to be no doubt of the profitableress of the ander- taking ro long as the war laste and the trade of Hamburg is cut off; but some anxiety is expressed that, if conditions existing before the war should return, the Gør- man house a, supported by a ready market for copra cako in their own country, would have an adventago asagainst the British manufacturer who must export most of his copra cake, on the British farmer bas not learned itssuperior feed value. Interviews had with various firms in Hull disclosed the fact) that while they all had done some testing and analysing, cone ap- peared to have exmined any specimens of the Philippine pro- duot. A sample of cadinery fair merchantabló Manila wazobtained from London, and has been tested by two mills, and is now in pro cess of texting by two others. The resulta so far are uncertain, and it is possible that the sample prcoured from London in not of Eufficiently high grade to meet the local demand. However, this office in direct communication with the ciation, and a Merchants' Aso-
is
exact informationped to procure Ochu, sun-dried an un-dried Manila, and ether-dried Philippine copra, together" of samples of enob grde,
