The Rice Trade.
The Siam Observer -laarns that "the Government of Indo-Chins has prohibited the export of rice antil further notice. No cffcial. intimation of this step has bean received at the Fronch Legation bere (says the paper quoted), but we are informed that it may be regarded as a quite probable one in the existing circumstanc93. The prohibition, of course, woald only apply to neutral countries and would not in any way change the trade as regards France and her Allies. In addition, however, and in corroboration, we learU that a well-known film hers has been informed by its Saigon agent that prohibition of rice experi from Indo China is in force' na regards the Noberlande Indien ard Holland. Wo need hardly! say, if this news is true-and we have no "reason to doubt our: informant," who is one of cur leading commercial mon-that- Sam will be in a very strong position vis-a-vis the rice markol, Happily the prezent, harvest pre- mises to be a bumper ore, 80 that cultivators, millers and the various bipping interests are admirably placed to take ad- Yantage of this change in mзrket conditions. It is a pity that it would appear at present an if shipping facilities here are not. in a position to cope as fully as might otherwise be the ozɛo with the large increase of trade which ie bound to follow from this aotion of the Saigon authorities,
Rubber Trade Comment.
From the rubber repr'rt-of Mezers. Banderson and Co. we] select the following:-The method of selling of rubber by private treaty has now been tried for five monthe, and we think it must be conceded that it has stood the test wall. The fact that all robber shipped from the East now comes to London, although resulting in a certain accumulation of stock here, appears on the whole to help the selling price. Our firm opinion is that the more the market is centralised, the better for the rollere. The greatest re- volution in the position bas been the development of the home trade. This has increased in a manner beyond all expectatione. As regards the future, all we can my is the prospects are very hopeful. Production of plantation kizda will no doubt show an in- eroase, but this may be set-off hy a decrease in Para sorts aud wild rabbere generally, Messrs. S. Figgis end Co. in their review ht
market the indiarubber
state that the good quality and condition of the bulk of the importé during 1014 Bect mucli credit on estate managers, hence plantation rubber in readily taken for nearly all purposes by the manufacturers, and the disparity in valas to Brazil." Para" has Bensibly diminished. Novel Euggestions. of new methods of selling met no appreciable succes, and were not welcomed by firme of old experience. The old law! of supply and demand still holds | good. The decisions of the Rub- ber Trade Association of London, for contracts enterad into previous to the war, bold and wise, saved a serious decline in values, if not apanio. The necessary reduction in personal expenses may tend to lees sale of private" motor-cara," but there are signs of a great increase in motors for haulage" all over the world-there will need many tyrer. Various now methods, Mesar. Gow, Wilson, and Stanton note in their rabber report, have been tried for curing later directly by the agency of smoke, but up to the present no new process has been proved commercially, and it is difficult to see how any advantage can possibly be attained by a direct smoking method over the indirept. Efforts haya again been made to produce soms new type of planta- tion rubber. They have not found favour, and ribbed smoked shoot and crepe remain the two estab-
