Manchuria Daily News, Well-Known Coast Skipper's Death,

With the passing of Captain John Richard Cook, says Ship- and Engineering, the China

coast marine has lost another of the old handa who came to the Coast in the days before steam was paramount. Born at Bristol in 1844, Captain Cook came to the East about thirty-five years ago in the sailing ship M.A. Dixon and after two oc three voyages joined the Chios Navigation Company and war several years in command. In 1800 he gave up active sea life and took charge of the opiam hulk Ariel, where he remained until shortly before his death. He was taken ill with pneumonia and ex- pired at the Nursing Home on February 4. The funeral, which took place at Bubbling Well cumber of representatives o

The cruiser Chiyoda was despatched from Port Arthur in order to aasial the Japanese ships. A later message says that the orniser rescued a vessal named the Taki Mara, which bad 4,000 tons of coal on board, after great difficulty, as. the ice was over two feet thick, The Yei Mara baisucceeded in ex tricating herself and has reached Port Arthur. The Chiyoda, which attempted also to rescue the Sir Richard Awdry, was nipped in the ice, and compelled to abandon her efforts. It is reported that the latter vessel is lying in a dan gerons position, and that the British consul at Dalny has re quested the assistsnos of the Japazess anthorities.
