A Neglected Singapore Industry.
There used to be in Singapore a factory for the splitting of rat- tane by machinery--a work which is mostly dons by hand, so far as this hemisphere is concerned, in Hongkong, Borneo and some of the Dutch islands. Liko many. another small local, industry of promine, is languished, dissolved itself, and never was resuscitat- ed. Up till the beginning of the War Era, rattan splitting was mostly dono in Austria, Cormary and America, but not on any great soule. As for un wa know, it is an unknowa industry in Britain, the users of the com- modity there depending on im portations. Two of the main sources of supply having diang peared, it is not too far-fetched to suggest that the re-establish- ment of the industry in Singapore might bring prof, to somebody. At 1801 it would be started with the advantages of a practically open market and an easily accessible supply of raw material, the whole rastan. I be business of making bentwood chairs the export of which from Austria, of course, will now pretty nearly cease-might be considered in conjugation with it. The pro- cess of making the actual bant. wood might not be sobievable here, but one heard the ether day that a saw process has been invented for making the chair frames of compressed cardboard very successfully. The Vica Coneal at Hamburg-or who wa at Hamburg-was advising the British chairmakers recently on the possibilities of the new idea, and no doubt the Board of Tradej could
furnish partionlais.- Straits Times-
Manchurian Malze."
The increasing demand for maize (called Indian core in America, says the Manchuria Daily News) in the United States is one of the interesting develop ments in the produce market of Manoburia. Up to last year only atray shipments, of inconsiderable quantities, were exported to America. A change was noticed about June last year. So far about 80,000 tons have been sent away, and the run of demands thus sustained promise to grow into a permanent business between Man-j churis and the United States. Indian corn has an almost .un- limited demand in the United States and its supply is also im- mense. A large annual supply comes from Bouth America which, however, has been afflicted with failure of cropa daring the past two years. We bear that the ex port of Manchurian meize is to fill. this gap. As the splendid quality and comparatively moderate price of the Manoburian product bas become known, it has been. find- ing favour, particularly among the millowners.

Oil In Shenst
The work of drilling the oil field which was discovered at Yen- chang has been started. From the report of the foreign experts, we learn that the field comprises on area of four hundred li, la the opinion of the experts, this is One of the largest oil fields that have ever been discovered. It is estimated that the whole quantity of oil it contains will be sufficient for supplying the world for a period of many years.
With re gard to the question of trans- portation facilities for the oil, it Bas been proposed that railways should be built for this purpose, but according to the view held by the Authorities, the work of trans“ port will be much more simplified and the cost lowered, if the oil be transported by means of ander- ground taber, which should be laid from Yenchang to Hankow through Sinyangohow, a distance of 1,300 miles. The coat of laying Buon system of iron tubes in catimated at $20,000,000. It is expected that the work will be
