Philippine Tobacco Prospects.
A Manila Borosu of Agriculture: inspector who has recently return- ed from the Cagayan valley 1- porta that the crop prospects for 1915, na far as tobacco is con- cerned, are very discouraging. The rainy season ended unusually carly and since then very little rain has fallen. The soxiously expected winter coins have also. failed. The first and early-cowa ssed beda wars almost entirely destroyed by the drought and as many as three additional sowinge bave been made. There are few if any of the planters who will succeed in setting out the usual area planted, and perhaps as an average not more than one halfef the area planted in 1914 will be planted this year. The Cugsyan valley usually produces about one-half the arnual Philippize crop of tobacco. It is now so late! that eved with favourable weather
conditions henceforth, the 1915 crop of tobacco will be very about.
Sino-Japanese Trade. According to a reperi of the Miniatry of Agriculture and Con- merce of Japan, the export of Japanese goode to China during the month of January was about. Yen 8,880,000 whilst imparts of Chinese goode to Japan were only Yen 3,110,000. The decrease of the importa from Chins in dne mainly to the decrease of imports from Central China,

Conversion Loan for Japan ''
Issued in London." The Jiji states that according to a London telegram received in Tokyo the Japanese Government on Monday, the 8th instant, issued, in London a short-term conversion
loan for £8,000,000 in the form of Treasury Bills, the rate of interest thereon being 54 per cent. per annum. The moerage adde that applications were numerous. The Chugai Shogyo says, in this connection, that the fact that the whole of the 4.75 per cent. and the Five per cent. Railway Bande, amounting to £4,000,000, have not been con- verted, and that the balance of £1,000,000 has to be redeemed in cash, has brought about a change in the financial admini uration. Prior to the negotiations entered into with British under- writers as to the redemption of the short-term loans referred 10, the Tokyo Government allotted to the railway administration for this year the sum of Y.20,000,000 "out of the National Debt Redemp tion Fund, believing that the whole of the loang would be easily converted. Now that the Govern- ment is obliged to roderm in cash the balance, amounting $1,000,000, the question hae arieen as to whether the expen- ditare allotted for the railway administration should be reduced:
to
Bangkok Companies. It is pretty well known, staten the Siam Observer, that the past twelve months have resulted in "profit to our local companies, though the dividends may not be equal to those for 1913. It is stated that the Bangkok Manu- facturing Company will declare a dividend of 5 per cent. for the half year, the Haknam Railway Company a dividend of 8 per cent. The Hangkok Dook Com pany directors have not yet met for the purpose of considering their balance sheet, but from all indications it appears that the samó dividend as last your is possible, that is, 8 per cent. The Siam Steam Packet Oom- pany, notwithstanding competi- tion on some of its lines, bae had a fairly good year according to all accounts and a dividend of 5
or 6 per cent, might be expected.
The Menim Motor Bunt Company ban also had a fairly good year and a fair dividend is probable. The Siam Electricity Company has had, so far as our information goes, a very good working your. There will, we think, when the balance sheet is made public, not be such a bad dividend as originally expected by some of the shareholders who sold out. The Siamese Tramwaya Company, notwithstanding the reduction in the track rent, has not had the turning point in ita career some shareholders hoped for.
