The Board of Trade Returns,
According to the trade aud navigation returns for 1 ember issued by the Board of Trade, the conree of our oversea trade in December was much the same na in November, though the shrink- age was mailer both in the totals and in the percentages represent") ed by them. The decrease Inst month, in the imports came lo £3,560,000, in round figures, or 5 per cent, compared with. £12,480,000, cr 18.22 per cent. in November, while the falling-off of £17,0-8,000, or 30.34 per cast., iu the
against go 8. $20,154,509, or 35 per cent. Compared with the figures for "December, 1913, the volume of foreign trade, that is, experts and importa together, declined by 220,007,900. The total of exporik! and the aggreg te of'imports bri December, 1913, and December, 1914, were under:-"

When we come to tho" results of the whole jar they ao far from discuraging, having regard to the facts that they include five months of war, that 1913 furnish- ed an absolute record, and that trade was already showing igus of slackening off before the out- break of hostilities. For the seven months to the end of July our imposts were down £5,241, 070, and the exports had fallen £4,357,025 Thera would, there- fore, have almost certainly been a decrease in the volume of cur foreign trade last year, even without any war. As it is, the imports in 1014, compared with 1913, show a decrease of 9'27 per cent., the exports are down 18 08 per cent., and the re-exports 1285 per cent. The totals of expore and imports for the last three years may be ret out separately thue-

Appended are the figures which relate to cur trade with the Far Edet, and from which it will be seen, in the first place, that the value of cotton yarn sent to the Da'ch East Indies increased from £4,081 in December, 1913, to £6,07 nét montb, and to the Struth Seltlements from £5,7u2 to £0 844, but only £1,705 wirili | of this article was taken by Chios and Hongkong against £8,120 worth in the corresponding mouth of last year, in the care of cotton piece-goode, cotton Bags, hand- kerchiefs and shawls, linen piece- goods, woollsh and worsted tissues, silk broad stuffs, and we 1 tops, there is no exception, to the general falling off in exoris, which the figures for the complete year only serve to accentuate, The exports of ship, bridge and boiler plates, black sheets tinued plates and sheets, wrought iron bara, rods, aud augles to Japan ware greater in December than in the corras onding month of 1913, although business in these goods. decreased on the whole year.
