supply of those materia's and Star Ferry Company, Ld.” ...$57 gods which have hitherto been largely imported from Germany and Austriashall be manufactured in England. This is especially the case with regard to chemicals and druge. "Hi, proof is needed of this one has only to glance at the windows of the chompists' shops of London," a scientific chemial of repute remarked to a represent- vative of the Obserzer. "Why has "it not been done before?" he was asked. The old story. Tho Eng- labman has to be prodded intal energy, but apart from that, whether we likis it or not,, the German has been more systematic Ho has given mère encourage- ment to research work. In Cermany in the past, a promising youth in a laboratory might bej allowell to go on for years-paid all, the time-in the hope of ultimate achievement. In the evont of success, of course, the' firm employing bim obtained an advantage which more than recompensod them for their outlay, nad Germany had scored again. It was the same in the case of plunt. The Englishman would not lay down expensive plant if the slightest risk was involved, but the war has induced him 10 alter his tactics." Some extra. ordinary effects of the war have been disclosed in connection with the supply of the everyday require. ments of chemists: Before the war, liquid paraffin, for example, east 9d. a bottle, but at the pre- sent moment the price is 2s. 6d. All, or nearly all, the liquid paraffin sold by chemists in thie country was imported from Bam- burg, although the raw material was obtained in Russia and could have been as easily imported bore as sent to Germany, The explana-, tion was that the parifying plant was to be found in Hamburg alode. To-day, however, rapid progress is being made by a British firm for the capture of this part of a great industry. The retail ohemists of England are eagerly assisting the manufacturers in their tank. Mr. H. W. Plews, the well-known chemist,, has been specially conspicuous in demon- strating what can be done. Al ready he is displaying. a wide assortment of drugs, scents, soaps, etc., of British make, which are subatitatea for those of German "Are these sub. manufacture. stitutes as good as the original?" he was asked. Undoubtedly, and better in the majority of cases. Take, for instance, acetyl-enlioglic noid. That was originally `a British discovery, but the Germane named it Aspirin, spent much money in advertising and collared the market. The two aro identi- eal. With other things it is the same. "Oibner, a now food, iss substitute for a widely advertised German article, und from every point of view it is superior." 30/1/936 ..
