The Coal Market.

Messra. Wheelock & n'a coal warket report, dated Shanghai, 21st January, states:-Coal- Japan-The contracts for 1915 have now fraotically all been settled. Although there is a certain amount of enquiry there is not mach doing with Native dealers, owing to the near approach of China New Year when money is always more tight than at any other time of the year, besides. which exchange is still a very great stumbling-block in the business. We do not expect to Boo any life in the market until after the holidays:

Cardiff Coal,—No change. Fashuc Coal-Some more con- tracts for 1915 have been settled, and imports are now arriving fr m Dalay, as Newchwang is closed for, the winter.

זי

Kaiping Coal-A-ontracts for the year are mostly fixed there is little to report, except that deliveries are being fairly well maintained.

The Freight Market. Mesore. Wheelock and Co.'s freight market - report,

dated Shanghai, 21st January, states

The position of our Homeward freight market remains very much the same as when last writing, and there is still more cargo offer- ing for export than the London Conference can find tonnage for. All lines are booked up well into March and in the meanwhile the Osference is endeavouring to arrange a charter to lift the surplus bookings. Across the "Pacific aloagers are also receiving very fair support but this market is no longer to corgeated as it was a month or so ago. We have to advise hippers by the New York Conference ola further increase of 5 per cent. on the Tariff No. 8 of May 1913 and to sum up the varicus rises and falls in ratea on this berth to date; we give below the rates named in that torff in- cluding the net increase of 25 per cent, but on which there is still a Burcharge of 10 per cent.. whiob took effect yesterday subject to the usual thras days' notice. Ocnetwise:-Thero has been a. distinct falling off in this trade binco last writing, and rates are not nearly as firm as they were, then. Various oauses have con- tributed to bring this about, chief: emongst these being the competi tion of Japanese tonnage daring the winter months, when trading on their own coaste is very much restricted. Owing to exceptional- ly severe weather up North the Peiho was frozan over temporarily, but it is hoped that the ice- breakere will be able to keep the river open if the weather mitigates a little. The market in the Boath has also declined, according to latest advices, owing to the tight- ness of money in view of the near approach of the Chins New Year.
