Mesara. James F. Hution and O, Ltd.. raport (Jau 1.):- Liverpro! Catton: Mid-Americul: Spot 31st ult. 4'624., last week 4'58d. Ditto, current month, 21st ult., 438d.; 4341 F.GF. Egyptian, spot, 0-300-6:301.. New York cotton: Spot, 30th ult., 0.7.80, last week 07.05. The holiday spirit which is usually to the fere between Christmas and the New Year is evident, busines being again Luspended for toli- days to-day. The market bag, however, showed mcrə animation than one might have expected in the middle of the festive season, A fair amount of baying of the raw material is reported frem Liverpool. Prices are firm, Spot Mid-American being quoted Dec. 29 481d., and 30th ̄ult. 4'62d4, The advance is rather surprising, and the position of the market is at the moment somewhat complex: The fact that the Ontinent bag been able to buy both eotuol cotton and also fatores in large quantities is no dontt a feature which very few regarded as poss- ible, and while this continues prices will remair Girmer. Another poirt is that spinners have done a│ much larger business during the past few months than bas heen admitted, with consequent effet on the market. Ia Manchester Piɛce Goode business goes along quietly. China is very uncertain. while the Near East still remaine a closed market. Prices for cloth have also strengthened with cot- ton, but when a reasonable for is made there is not much dif ficulty in finding a maker.
Trade in 1914.
The financial and commercial history of the past year, says the London and China Express, is comprised almost entirely in the dieorganisation of credit and business, coner quent on world- and the remedies wide war,

probabilitiea happenings and were, however, at once diverted and obliterated by the foreign complications which developed during July, and eventuated early in August in a conflagration is- volving the leading European Powers. It is satisfactory to be able to record that" so far no widespread disaster has followed the blow given to oredit. Steady sales of securities in this market! on Continental account, and ac companying withdrawale of gold were the firet indications of the coming storm, and prompt steps had to be taken to safeguard the The Bank funncial position.

The Stock Exchange posi tion presented more difficulties and complications than any other departments of business, and up to the close of the year it had not been possible to arrange for the resumption of business on any thing like a normal, baele, though a nominal settlement has been the speculative arranged of accounts open at the outbreak of war, Meantime street dealings

It must be confessed that whereas at these levels pur- ohanes can be made, sales ca only be effected with difficulty, if at all
