China as a Gold Producer.
to
A writer'in the Financial News, in the course of an article ron- tributed to that journal, remnike that if the gold production of the world is to be materially ivoreab ed, in order to provide for the wider eccncmie conditions after the war is over, what is wanted is not simply the discovery of new mines, but of new fields. Where, then, he asks, shall we look, for a new field where general conditions are favourable? Almost instinct- ively one's thoughts turn China and the possibilities of that vast territory. It is only within the last year or 60 that any facilities have been available for the development of the country's mineral resources by "Europeins. Even now, accord. ing to the new mining regule- tions, a foreigner can only bold about 50 per cent, of the capitali of any oudertaking formed 10 explot minerals, the rep ainder being held by Chinese; but we understand it is a comparatively easy matter to obtain an Imperial Edict whereby the Chinese are allowed to sell their holdings to, Europeane. Some companies Bre already operating-notably the Chinese Mining Company, in the Province of Chibli, and the Eastern Pioneer, is Western China, and area. We under stand, too, that the well-known firm of mining engineers, Meears. Bainbridge, Seymour and Co., recently sent out an expedition to inspect a huge concession in the Province of Chibli, which is known to be highly mineralised; but sufficient time has not elapsed to allow of any definite date be. coming available. This firm, however, is opening an cflice at Tientsin, which, being a port and the commercial capital, is ever more suitable for the purpose than Peking. As regarde PcceBE- ibility, thanks to the Trans Siberian Railway, it is possible to reach the known mineralised ares from London in twelve days, This area is situated north-east of Pek ing and about two days' journey north of the Trane-Siberian-Rail- way. Other portions of the great Mongolian territory should be come available to prospectors a3 railway construction proceeds. Already the line from Tintain through Peking reaches as far north-weet as Wan Chuan Hsien, close to the Great Wall of China, Thence it is expected that it will be ultimately pushed farther porthwards to link up with the Trans-Siberian line. Reverting to the Province of Chilli, the olimate is exceptionally good- the elevation is about 5,000 ft. abavo sen level-and roughly cor- responds with that of this country. The country is well watered by innumerable streams and rivers, and an examination of the beda of a great meny of those has disclos ed traces of gold.
