Having regard to what has already been accomplished, it cannot now be considered improbable that China. by the end of the present year will have succeeded in completely suppressing the cultivation of the poppy. In that event the import of Indian opium will": utomatically cease under the terme of the Anglo Chinese Agreement. is will then remain to be seen whether the Chinese Government, having once got rid of the Indian import, will con- tinue to exercise the same vigil anes to prevent a revival of the trade in native opiam. We can be sure that if there is any relaxation in the enforcement of the existing regulations it will not be long before the poppy will again be seen growing in many of the provinces of China.
