The one dredger possessed by the port seems to be doing all it can to keep the |channel open when it is not Isid up in Calcutts for repairc. Repeated requests have been made for a second one without avail. There in no possible chance. of the Trust ever finding the money for it and Government is jibbing at handing it over so large sum as Re. 13 lakhs for this purpose, the latest excuse being a stringency of funds on account of the war. The one dredger has, however, effected something tangible since it firat began to work in 1907, having at least kept the depth of water over the inner and outer bara somewhat greater on the average than in previous years. In the your 1912-13,- 757- steamers and 54 miling vessela entered the port; in 1913-14, 705- steamers and 48 sailing vessels entered; but the combined tonnage ia the latter was considerably higher, showing an increase of 51,064 tons. The total foreign trade of 1913-14 was somewhat less, but the coasting trade higher, and the aggregate trade higher by 10 47 per cent; · The work of survey and soundings has been vigorously maintained throughout the year, which was one present- ing unusual features.
