Beet Sugar. The censation of beet sugar supplies from Germany and Austria-eince the outbreak of war has led to a serious discussion of the question of making Great Bri tain its own producer in this article. There is no doubt that the British Isles can grow beet just as well as the Continent, perhaps batter, yet while prer 136 million tons of beet suger have been im- ported annually from the Cin tinent, there is. but a single factory in the country itself, at] Cantley in Norfolk. The Engineer calculates that British grown bet contains 17 per cent. of sugar, and that to produce. 1 million tous of sugar 9 million 100s of beat must be produced, which would nood 900,000 acres of land, As a matter of fact it would have to be grown on three times, thie area for the reason that it can ba grown on the same land only once in three years; but it so in rota might be grown tion with wheat and date. 110 factories dealing with 1,000 tons of beet per day or 80,000 tons per year in the annual working
