PANAMA CANAL RETURNS.

With public intereat the world over deaply absorbed in the great war, recent commercial, and shipping developments in neutral countries have naturally been forced somewhat into the background end have not claimed that degree of attention which they would have done had ordinary conditions prevailed. That is one of the chief reasons why go little notice has been paid to the opening of that wonderful waterway, tho Panama Canal, or to the facts which the first few months of its working have revealed. While, of course, it is the case that the disorganisation which the war has brought about in the shipping world has destroyed much of the value of the returns of traffic through the Canal, so far as they would serve to indicate any diversion from old routes, yet it is of interest to note a few facts which have developed from a two months' experience of actual working conditions. This we are able to do by analysing the returns recently made public in Washington, and circulated by most of the leading American papere.
