GENERAL NEWS.
The Oplum Question. The opiam qucation was the chief topic of discussion at a meeting of the Shanghai Mission- ary Association held recently in the Union Church Hall." Reports of a committee appointed to no into the matter were received from Rev. J. W. Crofoot and Mr. J.N. Bayward, the latter of whom spoke of meetings with the 9.M.U. The Council, be said, would give no smarance of adopting any new Cattitude until the present opium etonks were disposed of. The re- pórtconcladed:-"We recommend the continuation of your Com mittee, and this Association pledges itself to support it with earnest and congtaut prayer, atra lily and persistently: to use whatever personal influence any of us may have with ratepayers in order to obtain the promise of their vote in favour of the sup- pression of the licences when the matter aball, come before the ratepayers." The reporta were adopted by the Association.
A Charitable Golf Club. At the annual meeting of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, it was stated that a farmhouse on the golf course, capable of ac- commodating filteen persons, had been repaired and furnished, and that two Belgian families, num- bering ten persone, were already in occupation and maintained at the expense of the club, A fuad has been started by the captain, Mr. Tynell Giles, K.O., for this purpose, and nearly £200 already subscribed.
Aeroplane Projectiles.
The steel darte which are being dropped from hon ile aeroplanes are capable, it is said, of penetrit- ing a piece of teak one inch thick. In all probability this is under-i stating their effectiveness, for the acceleration dae solely to the action of the earth's gravity would cause the dart, to arrive on the ground at a high rate of speed. Aseuming it to be released 5,030 feet above the earthi-lower than which the aviator runs the risk of being brought down-it would be travelling at nearly 600 ft. a second at the earth's surface, or at more then a quarter of the speed at which a bullet leaves tho British service rifle.
