POLICY OF ITALY.

'Only Overt Act will Force

Country Into War. Washington, October 15.-The Italian Government's policy in regard to the European war was made plain by Ambassador Machi di Cellers to-day, when he stated that Italy would not take up arms unless she was forced to do so by some overt act which threatened her own safety.

Although officially a member of the Triple Alliance and bound by this agreement with Germany and Austria-Hungary for purposes of mutual protection, the Am, bassador said that his country had no intention of endangering ita neatrality by yielding to the influence of any outside Powers to take aides in the conflict.

This attitude of positive neu- trality, Mr. di Callere continued, which was supported by the prosent Ministry, in all prob." ability would continue to be upheld, even in case of minor obanges in the Government, This nasertion was made in ans- to the wer to enquiries as possible effect of the appointment of a successor to the Marquis di San Giuliano, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is reported to be seriously ill.
