propellera possess many unique features, two of them weighing 450 tons each. These turbines are revolved by the notion of steam passing through rings of fixed. and moving blades, which num- ber over a million, and vary in length from 1-1/2 to 20 inches. The ventilation of these vast machinery rooms is, owing to their size, upon an unparalleled scale, and is capable of handling... 20,000,000 cubic feet "of air per hour. The heart of the motive power of the ship lies in the starting-platform. There,

are arranged, besides controlling. levers, barometers, clinometers (abowing the frim of the ship) and electric clocks. The engineer officer fa obarge is thus made awara, not only of what is hap pening in the machinery spaces, but in the most distant parts of the ship. He controls the tur bines, the firing in the boiler rooms, and in addition most of the machinery and appliances on board for the comfort and con- venience of passengers, Ofthechief. engineer's staff of thirty-three en- gineer cffioera and 350 men, 30 per cent. of the officers are con- cerned entirely with the care and operation of this last-named machinery. For instance, the ventilating engineer is respon sible for the air supply and temperature of all rooms, the speed of fans and the amount of heat applied according to climatic conditions. The deck engineers superintend the supply of hot and cold salt water for baths, hot and cold fresh water for s'aterooms and lavatcrios, evapor. tion of 00 water,

and for all other services for which water is required. The electrical engineer cfficers have charge of a plant with suffi cient power to fight a to vn of 110,000 inhabitants. There are nearly 10,000 lights in the ship. and 200 electric motora. E'oc trioity is used on board for no fewer than forty distinct pur- poses, and the officers in charge have the supervision of such dif ferent appliances as elevators, gymnastic apparatus, fire alarms, telephones and electric olcoks. In connection with these electrio fans it may be mentioned that either by discharging warm air into the rooms or drawing out vitiated air, the plants can handle 12,000,000 cubic feet per hour.

Freights Rising. Partly owing to the withdrawal of steamers for trooping work there has been a large increase in the amount of cargo offering for regular boate between Calcutta and China and freights have risen in ooneequence. It is repcrled that at the end of Octo ber there were 50,000 tons of cargo awaiting transportation to China and Japan.
