In connection with a roport that New York banke were work. ing unnecessary, hardships by calling loane, the following com- munication has been addressed to them by the Controller of the Currency:

Complaints have reached this office that national banks in New York are imposing unnecessary
and unreasonable hardships upon borrowers whose obligations aro secured by collateral, and that certain banks are throwing out loans made on high-class or approved dividend paying securi- ties. Please send to this office promptly over sworn signature of your president or cashier the information called for.
First A descriptive list of thoso securities (not accounta held) which you were carrying for borrowers prior to August 1, 1914, which since that time you
have requested borrowers either to withdraw from loans or to pay loans upon which they were security because of dissatisfaction with such collateral.
Second-A descriptive list of all securities upon which you have required or are requiring borrowers to maintain margin of more than 25 per cent, indicating approximately as to such pecu- ritice the price at which you are now loaning to borrowers on those securities which have been die criminated against.
Third-Amount of your call loans secured by bond and stock

Rome. Sept. 14, The Giornale d'Italia states that Austria has removed her first line troops from the Italian frontier, particularly the com- panies of Greuz Schuetzea frontier guards and the Alpine sharpshooters, who are required against the RussİLKE.
The defence of the Italian frontier has been left to gen- darmes, reservists, and soldiers of the Landwehr and Landaturm. All the roade, moreover, have been cut by ditches, eight feet
