The War and Astronomy. The war has interfered with an important matter in astronomical research. To eight observatories around the globe have been BA- signed the task of monsuring the minute changes of latitude which, result from a small movement of the earth's agie, and the figures thus obtained were to be collated and examined by the staff of Potsdam Observatory. Professor - Helmert, of Potsdam, was recently honoured by the Order of the Rising Sun by the Mikado of "Japan (which country is concern. ed in this research) as a re- cognition of the important work; of which he has charge, and Professor Helmert hae just returned his Order to the Mikado: on account of Japan's declaration of war against Germany.-Lowton and China Express.
