The Outlook.

A hint, however, of a greater. and still more stupendous move- ment was contained in a paragraph which appeared in our columne yesterday end which has been amply corroborated in numerous, lettera received by recent maila from Home. This is the trans- portation of Russian troops vin the North Lea and Great Britain to France. Their numbers are varidualy estimated at from 72,000 to 250,000, but, whatever their strength may be, it is obvious that a large force of Russians, who have made a 2,500 miles journey vis Archangel, Scotland and England, may soon be operating against the Germane The German invaders will ther be confronted by a solid force of French, British, Belgian, Russion and Colonial troops and it remaine to be seen how long "the-most perfect military machine in the world" can hold out against auch a formidable combination of enemies.

There is scope for such prowess in the present war while Germany's Fleet refuses to move from the security of its fortified harbours, and when the possibi lity of disposing of the Fleet in the manner indicated by Sir Peroy Scott has been demonstrat- ed, perhaps greater readiness will be shown to accept the view that the day of the big battleship is over. But before the PowerN abandon the battleship, it is certain that more consideration will be given by naval architects to the defence that can be given to these helpless ships. Sir John Biles, one of the leading authorities on Naval Architecture, some time ago publicly made the suggestion that the effective advent of the submarine called for the consid- eration of the question of opply

The South African Sensation.

Somewhat alarming as seems, at the first glance, the news we publish to-day in another part of this issue, regarding a reported rebellion of a British Commando in South Africa, we feel certain that it need not occasion too much anxiety The Commando doubt- lese comprises Boors of a nomad order easily influenced into any sort of action by an uneorapalous. leader. Such Colonel Maritz appears to be, and evidently he of German extraction, judging by his name. Long before the war and ever since it began South Africa has been absolutely loyal to Great Britain, and that she will remain loyal cannot be doubt- ed. General Boths may be safely entrusted to deal with such miser- able poltroons, as Colonel Marita and bis recalcitrant followers.
