The Kochien Tugboat Com. pany's new salvago tug Brodio Olarke underwent her towing triala in the river at Shanghai on September 25, the tug towing six lighters with 400 tons of cargo in each.

Bluck. Point on the Shanghai side of the Fairway at 7 a.m. on Poptember 28 and remained fast until 7 p. on the following day, when she was refloated after lightering 500 tons of her cargo of coal.

There was launched from the New Engineering and Shipbuilding Works, Shanghai, on September 22the motor barge Meishan which has been built to the order of the Standard Oil Company for service bulk or case. Her dimensions on the Yangteze for carrying oil in
are, length 160ft, breadth 27.4ft. and depth 6.9ft, The propelling machinery consists of two sets of Beardmore, semi-Diesel engines of four cylinders and 130 b.p. enol.
Panama Canal Caisson. The steel lock-entrance caisson for emergency uso on the Panama Canal, which has been under construction at the Union Iron' Works at San Francisco was successfully launched on July 28. The caisson, which has a pear- shaped cross-section and is said
to be the Jargest of its kind ever 'built, ie 113ft. long, 38ft. wide and 65ft. deep. Some 650 tons of the concrete ballast was placed in its bottom before launching and 200 tons more will be re- quired before the structure is delivered.
Sunken Steamer.
The work of raising the sunken steamer Hokusei Maru in the Astra Channel has had to be. abandoned for the time being as it was found. necessary to send the salvage steamer back to Japan for repairs and overhaul. It is understood that a more powerful alvage steamer is being sent to replace her and work will shortly
be resumed.
