The new engine, in its simplest form, consists of two open-ended oylinders, side by side, each with two pistons. A pair of oblique roda connect the outside of the upper piston on the one side to the lower piston on the other. The. lower cylinders are connected in the usual way to cranks on a shafting. An explosion in one oylinder separates the pistons in that oylinder. Simultaneously through the action of the coupling rods it brings together the pistons in the second cylinder. The two cranks get equal and opposite. impulses. Any friction set up by the obliquity of the rods is stated to be less than would be the case if each piston had its own crank and connecting rod.

This new construction avoids the ase of cylinder covare, high-pres- sare joints, and vertical stresies. The reciprocating parts are oushioned at each end of the stroke by the fact that each stroke includes a compression and ex- plosion. The balance which results is stated to be practically perfect.

power can be produced with one- half to one-third the weight re- quired in other constructions, From a heat point of view the doable type of cylinder is stated to have incomparable advantages over all others; with the new co- struction such cylinders require but one crank each.

A demonstration engine instal- led in the works of the Newcastle Electric Sapply Company gives 550 B.H.P. continuously for a weight of less than 20 tons. This weight is stated to be less than half that of gas engines of equal

power."

Working upon available data, Mr. Fullagar suggests that with liquid fuel and a mean effective preamaro of 1151b., 4,000 B.H.P. should be obtainable with a four oylinder engine, having cylinders of 24 inches diameter..

Carge by German Steamers, Many foreign steamers on their way with cargo from Europe to Japan have been requisitioned by their Governments or have taken shelter in neutral ports. The Asahi states that the cargo car- ried by Germaneteamera for Japan and landed at intermediate ports, on account of the steamers being requisitioned, amounts to 10,000 tons, and nothing can. be done for the recovery of the goods so landed now that diplo matic relations between Japan and Germany have been broken aft.
