Queenstown and Large Ships.

The committee which is in. quiring into the capacity of Queenstown Harbour to socom modate the largest ships sat again in London last month, under the presidency of Lord" Sydenham.- Evidence was given by Rear- Admiral H. E. Parey-Cust (Ad- miralty hydrographer), who said that Queenstown Harbour stag quite unsafe for large steamers, such as the Mauretania and Olympic, especially in rough weather. There was not room for swinging and anchoring. No slur was cast upon the harbour. because of this fact, for it was etill one of the finest harbours in the world. It would, accommo- date ships from 20,000 to 24,000 tons. He did not think that any improvements were practicable which would insure the necessary safety for the larger ships. Cap- tain A. H. F. It was an unfortunate thing commercially for a port when, owing to the increase in the size of ships, those ships became too large for it. That had happen ed in other parts of the Empire. Queenstown was still a very fine harbour. Commander Charles,

foundered. All the crew were saved by the s.s. Yawata Maru and were landed at Nagasaki. News of the loss of the Glen Ling 8.8. Glenfarg was received in Shanghai early on Saturday morning. The vessel, which wRS under charter to the Chins Import and Export Lumber Co.," Ld, left Yokohama on July 20 for Yushiro, at which port she took on board a cargo of sleepers for Hankow. She left Moji on Thursday and was expected to evening, so it is to be presumed roach Woosung on Saturday that she met with the accident on the morning of the 14th instant. Shirose Island, on which there is light-house, is the last point in Japan which a ship bound from. Moji to Shanghai would pick up. It is supposed that the steamer foundered in about sixty fathoms of water. The Glenfarg was a steel screw steamer of 3,647 tona grow and 2,350 tons net register, and was built by the London and Glasgow Co., Ld. at Glasgow, in 1894. Her dimensions were t length, 360ft. breadth, 44ft. and depth 27.9. -N, O. Daily News
