The Pacific Mail 8.8. triberïa, 18,000 tons, Captain A, Zeader, arrived here last evening, myp the Shanghai Murcury of August. 5, after an exciting run up the coast from Hongkong en route to America, via Japanese ports, The ship left Hongkong on San... day with a full cargo and pas senger list and all went well until the following day, when smoke was seen, issuing from the No. 1 hold forward by one of the orew. The news was conveyed to the officer on watch and without alarming the passengers the crow were summoned and fire ap pliances, manned. The chief oficar, chief engineer, carper ter and a number of Chinese sailors decended into the hold, where flames were seen among a large quantity of jute cargo, while the hold was filled with thick stifling smoke. Two of the Chinese sailors were soon overcome by the fumes and it was with some difficulty that they were got, on deck by the officers, who were partially overcome also by the smoke. As soon as they reached the deck they received medical attention, while Captain Zeeder, who had allayed the fears of the passengera, directed, the efforts of the crew and every was taken. The hatches were bittened down and' every point of ventilation closed, while streams of water were poured into the holde, which were flooded. The fire was very stubborn and continued to blaze all night and yesterday and it was only faslly extinguished lust night, the ship in the meantime being kept on her course sud. ateaming towards Shanghai st her best spoed.
