The Press Censorship. In times of national crises, the newapapers, news agencies and correspondents have a peculiar duty to perform. They stand, in a measure," "between the actual oconrrences and the public. In times like the present, when the anxiety of every resident of the colony.ie et fever heat, there is frequent cavil that the news- papers do not contain more newG than they do, but this is readily explained by the extremely striat

No special complaint can be, or is made, regarding the arrangements for supervising the press of this colony, but advan tage is taken of the opportunity to point out that the messages „Fare censored in England previous
to despatch, are censored at Aden and Bombay en routa and are--even more strictly, perhaps ---censored upon arrival in Hong- kong, with the result that the public generally have good reason. to complain of the banalities and trivialities which are supplied to them as news of the greatest conflagration of centuries.

There is no subject of interest at the moment but the War, but enough phases, to from: becoming wearisome. Many illusions have been shattered already, though the War has not been in progress" a week. The fact that six of the European Powers including the five greatest are simultaneously at war shatters in the first place the great illusion that a European war is impossible in the present B2B. Writers like M. Jean de Bloch. and Mr. Norman Angell have been constantly telling us for many years peat that a Grest European War has been rendered impossible by the obligations and apprehensions of interlaced Finan cial interests, or, as one writer |háa put it, that “ owing to the costliness of modern warfare and to the fact that the whole abis. bodied manhood was enrolled in the army, war is now financially and economically impossible; that at the outbreak of war the national industries would come to a stand- still; that owing to the complexity of modern economic relations and to the wide ramifications of credit, the whole economic structure of a country at war would colls pas | like a house of cards.
