That com- modity is cottoa-the staple of our great Lancashire industry. For many years the English Cotton Growing Association has been promoting experiments in cotton-growing in our tropical dopondencies with more or lesa success. Now Lord Kitchener is able to point to a development in Egypt which is likely to have a very profound effect on the whole problem. It has been found possible by irrigation and drainage to reclaim land in the Nile Delta that for ages has been lying an erid waste, and to grow cotton at profitable rates. The success of this experiment may lead to the planting of another million and a half acres of waste land on the Nile, to say nothing of the enormous area in the
Soudan awaiting development. The significance of the enterprise 由 is two-fold. Not only does it ensure supplies of raw material for Lancashire's looms and
spindles, but it points, the way
to the economic development of our tropical dependencies. Cot- ton may be the key to a double prosperity,Globe.
