EXPLOSION ON CHINESE GUNBOAT.
THIRTY-FIVE MIDSHIPMEN MBET THEIR DEATH.
Vessel was Bound for Canton with Government Notes.
Shanghai. Received July 13: A mysterious explosion, alleged to be a bomb, occurred in the midshipman's quarters over the magazine in the Chinese gunboat Tungohi on Saturday evening.

Thirty-five Cantonese midshipmen were killed. Twenty-two of the bodies have been recovered. It will take daye to remove the wreckage.
A fire followed the explosion. The magazine was flooded most promptly, and the fire was subdued with aid "from the Kinngaon Arsonal.
The hull of the ship was not damage l'externally, but "the midshipmen's quarters and the schoolroom on the
main deck were blown up.
The only middy not killed was ashore at the time of the occurrence. The rest of the crew were Fukhionese, of whom a few were alightly injured, as well as some of the officere.

As regards the gitation in Canton concerning the alleged imposition of "poll-tax" in Kwangchowan, the French Legation states that no poll-tax oxists hat that identification cards have been issued to business men and others for which the rich pay one dollar and the middle class fifty cents, the poor receiving them free. These identification cards are in the nature of registration.
The Kwangchowan people have inade no protest regarding them, but certain agitators in Canton occasionally misrepresent the matter, alleging that a grievanco exists.
