In the Tropica.

At a recent meeting of the Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygieno, a paper was road by Dr. Cautlio, on "Some Aspects of Surgery in the Tropics." The subject of surgory in tropical work is one that is apt to be neglected in the overwhelming interest in, and attention paid to, the more fascinating subjects.of new discoveries of many kinds in the field of boteriology, bel- minthology, protozoology, &o. We send the young medical, mau | to the tropical? field nowadays; equipped in laboratory work in a way which is a credit to the) medical schools and a great com- fort to the men who are going out; but the prospect of having to undertake major operationa straightway on taking up duties abroad, is often bus little abort of a nightmare to syoung man of say, four-and-twenty who has never bad the opportunity of doing serious operations before leaving England. How to overcome this shortcoming in training is a difficult problem to solve. A "clinical school of operative surgery," as Dr. Cantile intimates, may be theoretically an excellent idea but the practicability of ite eatablishment is another matter. Practising on the dead body, 00 doubt, helps much, and such- stereotyped operations as amputa- tions, excision of joints, ligatura of ar.ories, &c.,, may be fairly well learned thereby, but even these very operations on the living body are a very different matter. Shanghai. Received July 7, The already severe depression in the piece goods trade at Shanghai is now greatly accentuated by the decision of tho Chekiang and Kiangsa Governments to enforce a heavy inoreste in the likin taxes.

It appears that, in response to a demand from the Central Government for funds from the provinces, "the" Treasurer of Chekiang, a month ago, despite strong opposition especially from Ningpo-largely increased the likin, and also the production and consumption taxes. Kiangen has issued a mandate that, from July 1, she will follow suit.

It is understood that the Piece Goods Guild at Nantao, which is one of the points of entry from Shanghai to Kinngsa, and which has hitherto compounded for likin production, and consumption taxes by the payment of $800. per month, has been informed that, $3,000 will now have to be paid, the Government retaining the right to collect the consumption tax.

It is also reported that the Guild's counter offer of $1,500 per month to cover everything has been peremptorily refused. The payment of $800 averaged 4 to 6 candareens to the piece. Despite the fact that the mandate stated that the new taxation would be enforced from July 1, the new tarifl ie not known.
