FOG GUN FIRED BY WIRELESS.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, JULY 7, 1914,

SPECIAL CABLES.

7.

Marconi Company Announces 'New Signal.for Const Dangers.

Announcement, was made" to- day by the Marconi Company in Eugland, through the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America, of a new device con- trolled by wireless, for sufety at Bea. It is a fog` gun, which is discharged ut frequent intervals by means of Horgian waves. This invention, it is assorted, should revolutionize signalling at | land or soa, and do much to make impossible collisions in fog or darkness.

There are at present two. such fog gens fitted with the Marconi control-both belonging to the Clyde Lighthouse Trust. Theso -guns, whon once started, will con- tinue to fire at intervale of about twenty seconds until the supply of acetylene gas is exhausted, which would take two or three weeks. The lucctio of the wire- lesa control is to enable the cOBALTM guard station to turn "on

and off the gun as desired, by this mesos prolonging the time for which tho gen may be left with-| out attention to from three to four months, according to the period of foggy weather exper- ienced,

It is impossible, according to the reports, to rely on sending a boat to regulate the gay supply,| since in mary weathers the beacon is unspproachable. The only alternative to wireless would ben cable, but not only would this mean a large iponse in laying. and maintaining the cable, but alan a cable, would be liable to break at a critical moment.
