SIR EDWARD GREY ON

THE PRESS.

Sir Edward G ey, K.G., was. the guest of the evening at the 26th annual dinner of the Foreign Presa Asociation at the Hotel Cecil, on 19th May, M. V. Con- durier de Chassaigne presided.

Bir E. Grey, responding to the" toset of "Our Guest proposed by the chairman, said that the work of the correspondents of the foraign Press was in many respecta akin to the work of diplomatists. The first duty of the diplomatist was to uphold the interests of his ̈ own country and in reconciling those interests with the preser- vation of peace. The duty of the diplomatist was to be clear and to put the point of view of his country in conciliatory and per susive language. Surely that corresponded very much with the work of the correspondents of the foroign Press. The Press played a powerful part, for it had power to decide what should be possible for foreign Ministers and what should not be possible. It was no good for a foreign Minister or a foreign Government to initiate a policy, however well intentioned. and benevolent, unless that policy to receive the approval of the Press.
