ing much less every day, Twelve million have been destroyed altogether. This is the worst visitation since 1894, when 36' tons were collected." Here we have clear evidence that in the two years when the epidemics of babonic plague have been most severo in the Colony there has been an extraordinary visitation of caterpillare. It would be interesting to know whether this remarkable coincidence had

bbon obierced by the authorities and whether any medical research work has been done, here or eleowhere, with a view to aeger- taining what, if any, relationship exists between these two note- worthy fauts. They seem to suggest a climatic origin of plague which no amount of effort on the part of the sanitary authorities can prevent or counteract,

Influence of the Cinema." "In all cohools the love and. appreciation of the beautiful and best in nature is consistently taught. It is, therefore, for the reasons that have been stated, time that pressure was brought to bear upon the manufacturers and exhibitora of films who could, if they would, exercise a great deal of good to prevent ther discounting the higher. education of the schools by ex-

posing those things in life whing to sh

arongly and degrading. A modification of the type of picture. alluded to, or, better still, its entire, elimination, would raise the cinema to a much higher level, and we are pleased to re- cord the fact that our higher- clase Hongkong cinemas do their best with the material placed at their disposal by the suppliers to eliminate what is distasteful. They could, however, do even better if the makers of films abroad were compelled to realise the harmful effect of some of the trash which they foist upon the public,

Shellim, the North Point Bathing Place is now quite, suitable for the necessary purpose. We feel No: 1683. sure that if the improvements, suggested by the Hon. Mr. Follock were carried into effect the place would certainly attract a much larger number of people. These improvements should not entail much expense, as it is not at all necessary that the place should be very thoroughly overhauled. Quite & little of what has been suggested would go a long way towards making North Point satisfactory place for many indulge in the healthful and in- vigorating aquatic exercises so beneficial and useful throughout. life and particularly to those living in such proximity to the sea as we all do here. We hope, therefore, that the Hon. Mr. Pollock's admirable suggestions may yet lead to the bathing station at North Point being improved and thus being the source of much pleasure to many who have neither the time nor the money to engage in bathing from off o Taunch in some secluded bay miles from the city.
