THE CANTON CURRENCY PROBLEM.

A distinct step forward in the scheme for the redemption of Canton's debased currency notes has been registered by the arrival of the first instalment of the million sterling Loss which has been borrowed for this specific purpose from the Quintuple Group of Bankers. The sum, totalling $1,500,000, came down, as we have already announced, by the s.s. Kanchow, and coinpident with its arrival came the two British cahiers who have been appointed in connection with the scheme. We are given to understand that the balance of the Loan will be forwarded in imilar instalments by ill shortly be convenient steamers, and that the whole amount

A Surprising Victory.

The victory of the English Polo Team in the first of the matches in the United States for the International Challenge Cup comes as a pleasing surprise to British sportsmen. It was cal- Loulated that the team was not nearly so strong as the combina- tion which last visited the States, and the general opinion in Eng. lend was that it could not bope for victory. Only a few daye before the Englishmen sailed the who plied her trade in the middle challengers (with the exception of the Whitefield Road, was told of Mr. John Trail) were beaten not to do it again, by Mr. Wood by a side captained by Mr. W.
