Perak journal. Mr. D. Beatty, Pro- NOTICE TO SHAREHOLDERS THE First Aquatic Fete of the

tector of Chinese, does not adopt the views expressed. "I do not consider," he remarked to a Malay Mail representative who inter- viewed him on the point, "that the position in Selangor is so serious as the Perak paper, seeme 10 consider it."

Mr. Beally denied that, as stated, owners of mines have disappeared without being able to meet paymont of the coolies' wager. Only four small failures have come to the knowledge of the Protector of Chinese, the towkays in two cases nbacoading, but in each of these cases there has been paid, and coolies have accepted without demar, a percentage of Commenting on the wages. statement that he was placed in a difficult position when an employer was found absent, Mr. Beatty pointed out that he was empower- od to issue warrants in such caZEN, So far as he was able to judge, some 500 coolies had been thrown out of work by the failures men- tioned, and he suspected that other small mines had settled with their coolies and dismissed them, but there were no cases of immediate dintres, coolies being looked after by their kongsis in A considerable many cases. Dumber of the coolies out of work are stated to have gone to the Rawang coal-felds to seek em- ployment, with what success we are unable to say.

That the coolies are not without any opportunity of employment is shown by the fact that only yesterday an estate manager made it known that he was prepared to give permanent employment to 200 coolien if they were prepared to take up estate work. There is no anticipation of any trouble among the coolies ont of employ- ment. None of them are destitute, and they have taken their loss of employment very quietly, much more quietly indeed than any other nationality then the philo, sophically minded Chinese would have done.

OTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that an EXTRAORDIN. AHY GENERAL MEETING of the HONGKONG IOE COM PANY, LIMITED, will be held at the Offices of Messrs. JARDINE, MATHESON & Co., LIMITED, No. 16. Sungei Buloh Rubber. Presiding at the meeting of the Sungei Buloh. Rabber Company, Mr. G. A. Talbot said that the results of the year's "working would be considered satisfactory by the shareholders, for they had, in spite of the fall in the price of rubber-in their case of 1s, 9.158. per lb.-been able to distribute The same dividend as last year, viz., 35 per cent. They were in this position because their crop had increased by 172,403 lbs., practically double the yield of last year, and the cost of produc- tion bad diminished from 24. 4.32d, to ls. 5 66d., viz., 10.68d. per lb., resulting in an increased profit of £3,438. It was some Batisfaction that the estimated crop had been exceeded by 49,200 lb., showing, as it did, that the estimates were framed on a conservative basis by their manager, and also that the trees had in the past been care- fully tapped. In fact, the reports of the inspectors showed that the tapping was too lightly done. 1914. That was a fault on the right side with young rubber. The carry- forward was £8,003, na compared
